We used to live on the Tx/Mex border where smuggling was a normal business. Seeing and hearing the old bomber planes became an every day occurance - they took off around dusk and returned about dawn.

Cool plane the B-24. I think I've been inside that very one at a small airport in NC....not too many of 'em left. Good thing it didn't fly by a couple of weeks ago...it was definitely in rocket range. We would've have some explaining to do.

I, like you, am so pissed I can't see straight, and I agree...everyone should be as well-armed as possible. I can't help but think that if someone in that room had been armed, there would've far fewer deaths and wounded.

Oh man does that sound take me back. Not old enough to have been around when girls like her were flying every day but still in my youth the cargo and even a lot of passenger planes were still prop pulled.

Can you imagine standing outside your home in Blighty Old England and hearing hundreds upon hundreds take off heading to raze the towns and factories of Nazi Germany. Or worse....first hearing, then seeing them come into view from the Northwestern horizon, watching the puffs of AAA fire as the gunners tried to get the range, hoping against hope that you wouldn't get to hear the shrill scream of thousands and yet more thousands of iron eggs streaming toward the ground. Not that day if you were lucky.

I once flew through a small bombing strike and lived to tell about it. Oblivious at the time to the danger, seeing the ground below me shatter into dust and smoke was enough to make me almost pee down my leg.

One of my father's cronies was a crewman on b-24s in the Pacific Theater in WWII. I only heard him talk about it once and that when he was a bit tight. He said one of the things he hated most was a ritual before missions. They had to turn the props on the four engines through several rotation by hand to work the oil up in the cylinders before they could fire them up. He said that every time he put the blade of a prop to his should and walked it through, it was like bearing a cross on his shoulder on the road to Golgotha. It was a few years later before I really understood what he meant.
As to Fort Hood. From what I've read, weapons are used on the range and then locked up in the armory. The only weapons carried on base are by MPs or contract security officers. It would appear to me that it makes a military base as potential a killing ground as any University or College campus.

My anger is beyond anything I have felt before. I can believe he was shot 4 times and still lived. My cousin was shot by him 4 times. The only difference is, my cousin may never walk again.
