Swords...

... today I'm off to rummage through my Father's barn with a good friend of mine.... it has been a long time since I've set foot in that building..

... once upon a time, my Dad used his spare time after work to weld and grind swords and knives out of broken pieces of railroad rail... and the barn is absolutely full of his barbaric creations.... He was constantly busy with his hands... bending copper wire, flattening copper pipes, or beating on a piece of brass on his anvil to fashion sculpturic pieces of "art"

... my Dad was a gentle man, but he definitely had a Conan The Barbarian streak in him.... well, a bit of Conan and a bit of Dali..

.. anyway, what weapons and artifacts I find in the ramshackle building today will be displayed on the wall of my garage as ornaments... or for use just in case things get gnarly on a poolnight and we find ourselves in need of chopping instruments... or maybe just in need of pondering some strange bit of twisted metal....

... besides, you just never know when you'll be called upon to outfit a squad of warriors with big, scary, weapons.... What?... hey, it could happen.....

Would love to see some of what you find. Besides, keep in mind that even people with guns will turn and run if confronted with a good blade. Something deep in our psyche on that, methinks.

I have made a few machetes out of leaf springs from an old car but never though about makeing anything but an anvil from rails. But is reckon the high carbon steel in the rails would make a hell of a machete even it did take a lot of cutting to shape it and one hell of a lot of retempering after it annealed.
