Stingers...

... the myriad of insects inhabiting my little patch of Tennessee never ceases to amaze me.. take this little fella, for instance... I have absolutely no idea what it is, but it performed some incredible fly-bys around my noggin yesterday afternoon whist I sipped my tea...

... oh yeah, curiosities abound around here, people... other than his obvious affiliation with the Imperial Japanese, he offered little data on his backyard function... he does kinda remind me of a souped-up mosquito that has had his ride pimped though... but does anyone have any idea what it is?... I have none... and he buzzed away before I got a chance to smash him, so he is still happily roaming somewhere in the woods...

.. if I see him again, I'll attempt to see if that pointy thing on his rear end is a stinger or not... I'm sure y'all are riveted, so I'll be sure to keep you informed...

I don't know what it is but from the looks of the red dot on it I think you had it in your sights. Why didn't you just shoot the damn thing and tell god it died. You have checked to see if was really a stinger or just something fake to scare you away.

... the dot was integral to the beast, Guy... he and his dot flew off before I got the drop on him...

Hell we got way moskitters bigger than that up here in the Nort. Our moskitters are so big we have to hide the chickens when they are out and about.

Upon first glance, I take it for some kind of Hymnoptera, or Spider Wasp. Then I notice that it appears to lack feelers, so that can be it. Basically, it looks like some kind of parasitic wasp. While it can sting, it is unlikeyly that it will sting -- you just don't smell and taste right to it.

My first reaction as the page finished loading was: "Good God what the hell is that?"

As a city chick I've always said I'm not afraid of anything. But hell, even in NYC if I were to come across such an aberation of nature I'd run screaming. I'd then go and either get a blow torch, or a rifle or maybe I'd fill up one of those huge kid's water machine guns (that shoot water upto 20 ft) and kill that sucker with a solution of clorox and water. I'd bet anything if you saw me frantically in you're yard trying to get that thing you'd fall down hysterically from laughter!

If Mrs. Parkway ever ran into that bugger, she would positively go batshit. And, if it worked its way into the House by the Parkway, there would be no rest until its dead body was displayed (from the other side of the room, of course).

...keep 'em over there!

Last summer, I had some of the biggest and ugliest bugs and spiders...I hung bird feeders near the porches and in the yard...less bugs this year.

What's fun is watching my dogs chase Bumble Bees and Wasps...they eat them.

Good lord... A spider wasp?? Spiders and wasps do NOT go together.... Ugh.

This would be one of the big reasons I like living up North. We may be cold - but it kills off those hideous bugs!

Red dot... Hindu, maybe?

Looks like a small buzzard to me. Seriously, isn't that one of those mosquito hawks?
