Sing us a Song...

... an interesting thing happened on the way back from Nashville..... while I was blasting along, I had the tunes kicking... everything.... Zevon, Joel, Dino... the whole bag of tricks..... pretty damn eclectic... hey, it is my natural state... relax...

.... anyway... the morning yesterday dawned on a bright, sunny, and frosty day... great for driving... trust me, children, the pleasure was all mine.... but, after a few miles, it happened.... cruising about 92 on I-40, a thought came to me as the tunes rang true... I know this is going to sound whacked, but I think Billy Joel's Piano Man sounds a lot like blogging.... I mean, people come to your site to "forget about life for a while" right?... and, admit it... "write us a blog, you're the Velociman" just has a ring to it... think about it, children... the term would work equally well thusly.. "write us a blog, you're the Acidman".... where as, "write us a blog, you're the Straight White Guy" would just fuck up the mood 100%.... strange, that...

.... what the Hell am I talking about?.... listen to the song... REALLY listen to it... and substitute a blogger for the piano throughout... trust me... it works.... either that, or Harvey is right about the symptoms of blogging too much...

... so, with many apologies to Billy Joel... I submit to you a humble link-orgy... feel free to sing along...

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin
He says," Son can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"
Sing us song , you're the piano Acidman
Sing us song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill ,I believe this is killing me"
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well. I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy Mike who's still in the Navy Marine Corps
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone
sing us a song you're the piano Velociman
sing us a song tonight
we're all in the mood for a melody
and you've got us feelin' alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for awhile
And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say "Man what are you doing here?"

Bullshit So Far

It's depressing to not even rate a link.

Now I'm sad.

All this time I thought you were the peanut butter for my chocolate.

That is GREAT!

You always ROCK, dude.

Bullshitted by Christina on December 19, 2004 12:50 PM

Wow. Okay, I'm not laughing anymore; very impressive, Eric!

I'm sitting here easing into my pleasant melancholy with Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and you come up with this. I am NOT listening to the OLD Billy Joel (pre-Christie Brinkley) stuff or any Don Henley, because both of those guys wrote in the style I like to refer to as "music to slit your wrists by".

Eric, there is a lot more depth to you than you give yourself credit for.

Thanks for letting me be your bread in a jar. I'm honored.

I never knew I hurt that bad... Maybe I need to get me one of those poison lable skull and crossbones images up just so people know I'll kill 'em. ;)

Excellent, bro. Lots of good blogs there too.

Interesting that we earned the same status as Dogsnot Diaries. I'm not sure if that is good or bad...perhaps I shall read his blog and find out!

Not sure why you think I'm such a youngster. I'm 33 for cryin' out loud. Thanks for the linkage and the excellent post. I needed that.

Not sure how I missed being linked with "Navy", but I'm just flattered to be in at all :-)

Bullshitted by Harvey on December 19, 2004 11:44 PM

Bravo! Bravo! Clap, clap, clap, clap!
Very well done. (One of my all time favorite songs - BTW)

Damn, Eric! Always have loved that song, and you did a hell of a job with it. No apologies should be needed to Billy Joel.

And, thanks for the link, bro!

Hmmm. I gotta get this trackback stuff fixed!

Good work, dude! Like you needed one more person to tell you that!

Bullshitted by John of Argghhh! on December 20, 2004 04:28 PM

Ah, yes. The only song that guy ever sang that I found to listen to.

Thanks for posting it. I never liked his music, but I did like the lyrics this one time.

You're right, everybody's in there. It doesn't have to be bloggers, it can be 'other' people that you know.

If you don't get anything out of that song, you haven't lived long enough to Have A Life.

As usual, you have pipped the ace. No wonder I have you on my wish list. Thank you for including me. :)

Don't let Billy Joel drive. The old man is Acidman. I am the Walrus. Coo coo ka-choo.
