Tae a Haggis...

... I have a favor to ask all of you... I need a Haggis... visitors are coming to Straight White House during June... coming all the way from Alaska... the last time they came to visit, I was living in Ecosse... and, of course, we served them the Great Chieftain.. well, that was probably a mistake.. why?.. well, a formal request for numerous Haggi to be served with lashings of Single Malt has been received.... shit... I'm sunk... I just called my old butcher in Brechin... he said that there was no way in hades that customs would let his haggis through into our hallowed, non-offal-eating country... shit... so, my dear Peeps... what is a poor man to do?.. I need a Haggis, dammit... perferably a big sumbitch... or... maybe a flock of smaller ones would suffice.... still, it is all academic... so, I'm fucked if you can't help...

... in short... I am laying it all on the line on this blog... laying my NEEDS bare to view.... so, a plea for help, Friends.... if you know of ANY place in the continental US where I can find an authentic Haggis... cough up an address, URL, or phone number, and you will be forever cherished in the Straight White Household as "Da Man".... or, indeed, "Da Woman", if that is the case....

Anyway.

Being Irish myself, I know nothing much of haggis, though I am enough of a gourmet to know better than to opt for canned. Nonetheless, it's here. For entertainment purposes, I suppose.

If you haven't had luck by Monday, I can call a shop in Alexandria that has it, to see if they'll ship it to you. Just let me know!

..thanks, Maura... I will check them out... but, I must admit.. I would prefer it not to be tinned... half of the appeal of a Haggis is in it's wrappings...

The shop in my ole hometown carried the real deal last time I was there. Worry not, doll - do you think I'd seriously offer you canned? ;o)

...Maura.. if you could get me authentic wrapped haggis, I would be in your debt forevuh.. damn, Darlin.. that would be incredible...

I could probably shove some armadillo road kill in a sweatsock, douse it in MacCallan's, and overnight it to you. Otherwise I am of no use to you.

Eric - the shop wasn't currently carrying it and were having similar issues that many do (with the importation restrictions).

But not all.

Will this do?

:o)

.. that link mentions that it is packed in real stomach.. dayum.. I will be calling them on Monday...

...V-man, that's a hell of an idea... if Maura's idea doesn't pan out, I'm willing to give the 'dillo a try.. the Alaskan's won't know the difference... so, stay alert, man..

Stewart's Butcher (Scottish)
338 Kearny Ave
Kearny, NJ 07032-2624
Phone: (201) 991-1436

I grew up there, and they had all Scottish stuff; meat pies, puff paste, and, yes, I believe haggis. I doubt much has changed. I don't know if they have a way to ship stuff, though.

Hell, in Kearny, we had three or four real fish and chips places, and a place where one could buy their kilt with all the doodads. I keep meaning to do a blog about Kearny.

It's Jan 6, 05 and I've been searching for days to find a Haggis in time for Robbie Burns day!
I finally found an FDA approved haggis who will ship but the shipping and handling cost almost $30, the 3lb haggis cost about $17. That's nearly 50 bucks for a bag of oatmeal flavored with sheep guts and suet! And if it's FDA approved it could'nt possibly be authentic anyway! I called ST Andrew's, a Scottish pub in NYC that does the whole RB dinner complete w the Address and appropriate Toasts, they get teir Haggis from Stewart's in NJ. I looked it up on the Web to get address and details and was directed to this site. Thanks
